Why Vision Matters in Crisis

Image
As a leader, you’ve thought a lot about where to take your business in the next year. But major disruptions—like the coronavirus crisis—can upend your vision. It’s a disorienting time, and it’s tempting to just hunker down and try to survive. Is it even possible to have a vision for the future right now?

Now is the Perfect Time to Start an Ultralearning Project

Image
When I published Ultralearning last August, I had no idea how the world would have changed six months later. Self-directed learning from home has become a requirement for millions, not just a quirky pastime for a few. Yet I understand if getting excited about learning seems far from your mind right now. These are scary times. Both our physical and economic health are in danger, and it can often feel like there’s nothing you can do but sit and panic-scroll your newsfeed all day. There’s no shame in being worried. I am too. But in tough times, it is how we choose to respond to our worries that will define us as people in the years to come. Did we dissolve into panic, or did we rise up and do something constructive? Now is the time to learn. No, you can’t control what will happen to the world around you, but you can make yourself a better person, more equipped for the road ahead. Investing in learning something deeply is more valuable now than ever: Learning makes you a more inform...

The Importance of Meditation in Crazy Times

By Leo Babauta These are times of heightened change, disruption, uncertainty, fear, anxiety. It can feel pretty crazy for most of us. So how do we cope? What can we do in the middle of chaos and crisis? This is when meditation becomes of critical importance. Without meditation, we have no way of dealing with the anxieties coming up. All of our old ways of coping (which don’t normally work very well) are not working at all: Distraction and ignoring (how can you ignore something that’s everywhere?) Procrastination and avoiding (you can’t avoid this crisis) Control of all kinds (you can’t control this, though we’re all trying to find ways to control) Exiting, quitting (you can’t exit from the world) Complaining, lashing out at others (you can do this, but it only makes the situation worse) Worrying (yep, that’s happening a lot) So if our usual ways of coping with worry and uncertainty cannot work right now … what can we do? We can freak out. Or we can meditate. It’s our cho...

Why You Should Still Be Charging for Your Products

Image
You’ve probably noticed the trend in the last week of businesses offering products or services for free to help out during the COVID-19 crisis. I applaud the impulse, but there’s a fatal flaw in the logic—the economy depends on people creating value and other people recognizing that value and willingly paying for it.

Image
The opportunity to work from home sounds great! But the reality of being forced to make that shift on short notice can be stressful. Add to that the school closings, work-from-home spouses, and the general uncertainty of the times. It’s nerve-wracking! You may be wondering how to keep your sanity, let alone keep your focus.

What are the Core Ideas of Self-Improvement?

Image
In any field, there are a few ideas that are core to understanding everything else. Biology makes little sense without evolution . Physics without symmetries and conservation laws is baffling. All mathematics can be built out of sets . Self-improvement isn’t usually regarded as an intellectual field. It’s mostly an assortment of various gurus and pundits’ suggestions on how you ought to be more successful, happier or wise. Thus it might seem like self-improvement doesn’t really have core ideas at all—just opinions. However, I think there are some common themes to the art of living better. These ideas are pervasive, coming up again and again. Even in the writing of people who take a stand against them, their prevalence still requires that they be acknowledged. The Core Ideas 1. Habits Nearly all forms of self-improvement first require that you change your behavior. Unless the improvement you’re after is purely mental, you’re going to have to actually do something first. Habit...

7 Benefits of Working Remotely

Image
Leverage this Opportunity to Improve Productivity and Morale When the COVID-19 crisis made it necessary for our team to work from home, the transition was seamless. We began as a completely remote company six years ago. And when we did add an office two years ago, it was as a place for collaboration and communication. To this day, no one has a traditional office in that space. We’re not alone in that. In 1980 only about 2 percent of U.S. employees telecommuted. Now at least a quarter of workers do so at least some of the time. And according to Global Workplace Analytics half of U.S. jobs could be done remotely. Some companies, like Buffer, which has fifty employees, closed their offices entirely even before this crisis. I still think there are good reasons for office space. For some businesses it’s essential. But if current circumstances have forced you or your team into working from home, you may actually benefit from the experience. Here are some advantages we’ve gained fr...

4 Mindfulness Practices That We Need Right Now

By Leo Babauta In the middle of the chaos of the world right now, what can we do to take care of ourselves? Let’s talk about a handful of simple mindfulness practices that can be helpful. Breathe deeply into the belly . This is one to start with, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. We get caught up in our heads, stuck in a cycle of thoughts that are rarely very helpful. So to get out of our heads and into our bodies, we can do deep breathes, into the deepest part of our bellies. Do several breaths like this, maybe for 30-60 seconds if you have time. This not only calms you down, but helps you to be more present with your body and surroundings. Check on your feelings, give yourself compassion . Turn your attention to the sensations in your body, and notice how uncertainty and fear/anxiety might feel for you right now, as a bodily experience. This, again, helps get you out of your thoughts, but also it’s important to notice how you’re feeling. Practice giving these feeling...
